거문도(Port Hamilton) 및 조발도 여행 (2025.8.20 – 2025.8.22)

평소부터 거문도의 Port Hamilton 유적지 탐방 및 군대생활을 했던 조발도를 방문하고 싶어하던중 최근 아들이 직장에서 휴가를 내고 주선한 양구 Punch Bowl 지구 탐방이 대단히 좋았던 것을 고려하여 집사람을 설득하고 다시 여행을 결심하였다. While I was wishing to visit the island of Komun (Port Hamilton) for its relics and the island of Chobal for the place of my military service, I was happy to travel the area of Yanggu Punchbowl possible to my son's leaves from his company and I made up my mind to visit these islands after persuading my wife to go together. 

당초 일정은 일주일 앞서 시행하고자 하였으나 여수에서 거문도 가는 배편이 매진되어 다른 예매를 취소하며 늦추어 시행하게 되었다. 배편은 Hamel Ferry였는데 아마도 2025.8.15 국경일 휴무가 주말로 이어지며 인파가 몰렸다 생각되었다. 사실 배편이 매진되리라고 생각하지 않고 열차편이 Bottle Neck이라 생각했고 관련 방문지의 숙소가 우려되었는데 생각이 빗나갔다. 배편 예매 시 육지의 가족 연락처가 필요하여 아들에게 여행일정을 알렸는데 걱정이 되는 배편에 대해 관심을 보였다. Originally, I planned to travel one week earlier than the actual plan, but all tickets of ship for the island had sold out, so I had to re-arrange the itinerary. The boat to board on was Hamel Ferry, and it was not available due to the national holiday, August 15 for Liberation Day, many proples were supposed to travel. Actually, I didn't think of the boat ticket and rather the tickets of Railways and accomodation would be scarce, but my expectation was wrong. I informed my son of the emergency contact of inland guardian required to reserve the ticket, and he was very concerned about our safety of the boat travel.  

Port Hamilton은 영국이 거문도를 점거하여 항만시설 및 기지를 구축하여 1885 – 1887 약 2년간 유지한 해군기지이며 Russia의 해상으로 진출을 예방하기 위한 조치로 이룩한 시설이었다. 오래 전에 이 사실을 알게 되었고 관련 사고 등 사망한 수병들의 묘지가 있음을 알게 되었기에 호기심이 발동되었다. 한편 조발도는 1978 – 1979 전경으로 복무 시 인연이 있게 되었고 출장 또는 휴가 시 여수항에서 여객선을 타고 한 참 섬들을 거쳐 육지에 연한 조발도에 내려 초소로 갔던 기억이 있어 그 때의 인연을 찾아 방문하고 싶었었다. 당시 섬에 복무하며 대 간첩작전으로 탐조등을 비추며 야간 선박 침투를 감시하는 직무를 수행하였었고 간혹 어선을 빌려 인근 여수 화양면 해변으로 가 축구시합을 하고 돌아오던 기억도 있었다.  The Poer Hamilton was established by British Navy to prevent the Russian southward advance, installing a port and naval base during 1885 to 1887 for two years. I had well been aware of this fact that there was British graves of naval soldiers in the island, so I was very interested in the island. Meanwhile, I was interested in Chobal Island, because I had worked there for military service during 1978 to 1979 and memories of my activities from Yosu harbor to the island, boadrding off the boat and walking to the marine post where I worked.  I could remember that at that time my job was to run the search light for detecting infiltrators on ship from North Korea, and our scout often crossed the sea to the nearby school yard to play the football game. 

전체 2박 3일 여행에 소요된 비용은 약 70만원이었고 첫날 숙소는 거문도 Hotel이었고 둘쨋날은 여수 화양면의 Economic Pension이었다. 당초 계획했던 일정 중 여수의 Hamel 등대 및 이순신 장군의 선소를 가지 못했으나 대체로 계획데로 잘 다녀왔다. 사진은 1875년 당시 서양에서 작성한 거문도에 대한 지도이다.  I costed totally seven hundred thousand KRW for the 2 nights and 3 days travel, and the first accomodation was the sole hotel in Komun isalnd and the second one was a pension arranged by my son, loccated at a seashore in Hwayang-myon, Yosu. I could well follow the itinerary, even though the Hamel Lighthouse and General Lee's Shipyard in Yosu were not visisted.  The photo shows a map of Komun island prepared in 1875. 

2025.8.20 여행 Travel in August 20th, 2025

오전 8시 KTX가 출발하기에 집사람과 5시에 기상하여 서울역에서 열차를 탔다. 3시간 후 11시경 여수Expo역 도착하여 30분 걸어서 여수 연안여객선으로 이동했고 중간에 꼬막비빔밥으로 점심을 먹었다. 역 주변에 Expo당시 건설한 웅장한 건물이 눈에 띄었고 민간에 분양된 듯 식당과 Cafe가 많이 눈에 띄었다. My wife and I woke up at 5 AM and got on the KTX train for Yosu. We arrived Yosu after three hours at around 11 AM and walked to the ferry terminal for 30 minutes. On the way of the terminal, we had a lunch at a restaurant. Near the station, big buildings were stood, supposed to build for Expo, with many restaurants and cafes. 

Ferry는 오후 1시 30분 출발하여 다소 여유가 있었기에 Coffee를 사고자 Terminal 주변을 다녔으나 건어물 가계가 대부분이고 식당만 있어 돌아와 내부에 있는 자판기에서 음료를 사서 먹었다. 배편은 이미 예약이 되었기에 신분증으로 탑승권을 받아 승선하였다. 예정데로 배는 출항하였고 시속 80 km 빠른 속도로 여자만을 가로질러 순항하였다. 순항1시간 후 여자만을 벗어나 대양으로 진입하자 2.5m 큰 파도가 일고 배가 앞뒤로 오르락거렸다. 옆에 앉은 집사람은 초반에는 신기한지 창밖을 계속 보고 있었으나 어느새 잠이 들어 파도를 의식하지 않고 있었으나 나는 점차 속이 불편해지기 시작해서 만일의 경우를 대비 구토용 봉투를 확인하며 참고 있었다. 집사람이 깨면서 “아니 전경대에 있었고 그 전에 해군에 가고자 했던 사람이 이정도 파도에 토하려고 하느냐?”라고 말하며 내 손의 엄지와 검지 사이를 꼭 눌러주었다. 좀 도움이 되는 것 같았는데 집사람이 거문도가 보인 다라고 말하며 배는 거문도의 서도항에 먼저 기항하여 승객을 내렸고 이어서 고도의 종점 거문도항에 도착하였다. 집사람이 보니 승객들은 모두 육지에서 채소와 식료품을 들고 내렸으며 대부분 별도로 화물을 찾아 나간 다라고 말했다. 이 말은 나중에 식사하며 식당주인의 말을 통해 사실로 확인되었다. 비행기처럼 15 kg 이내만 휴대가 허용되기에 대부분 화물비용을 별도 지불하여야 했으나 그들 운임은 1,000원으로 혜택이 컸다.    사진은 국내에서 가장 빠른 고속 Ferry를 보여준다. I had a extra time for the ferry departed at one oclock and thirty minutes and strolled around the terminal, but most of the streets were packed with dried seafood shops. I returned to the terminal and had a beverage from a vending machine. To get on the ferry, we had to show our IDs to staffs for boarding passes. The ferry departed on time and sailed with 80 kilometers to cross the Yoja straight. After one hour, the ship came into a ocean just out of the bay and started to roll heavily with the 2.5 meter waves. My wife beside me at first looked over the sea, supposed to be curious, but soon she fell a sleep comfortably. However, I felt sick and prepared for a vomit in case. My wife told me, "You were a naval soldier and wished to be a navy, but how could you be annoyed at this condition?" She helped me to get over the sea sick with pushing down my hand between thumb and first finger, and it was quite helpful. When she told me, "There  was the Komu Island and I can see.", the ship was dropped by the Seodo port and followingly arrived at the destination Komun Island called as Jung Island. 

 

거문항에 도착하니 Hotel Shuttle Bus가 대기하고 있어 승차하여 바로 고도와 서도를 있는 다리를 통과하여 숙소에 도착하였다. Check-in하면서 계획된 서도 남단 거문도 등대가는 법을 물었고 방에 짐을 푼 후 오후 4시 좀 지나 바로 등대로 향하였다. 숙소에서 2.5 km 떨어져 있는데 도보로 한 시간 소요되었다. 가는 중간에 목넘어라는 서도와 남단의 등대가 있는 무인도를 연결하는 지점에 진입하여 횡단하려고 했으나 집사람이 맞은편 섬과 아래 연결되는 바위들을 보고 길이 없는 줄 알고 겁을 먹고 가지 않으려 했다. 그래서 내가 내려가서 목너머 바위사이에 나 있는 길을 가리키며 안심을 시켜주었고 그래서 집사람과 같이 목너머를 건너 맞은편 섬으로 올라 등대로 향하였다. 가는 길은 오동나무가 서식하였고 아열대 산림으로 일본에 온 기분이 들었다. 산허리 오솔길을 돌아 등대에 도착하였고 집사람은 우선 화장실을 찾아 얼굴에 난 땀을 씻었고 나는 바로 절벽에 설치된 서도 최 남단 (즉 여수에서 최 남단이나 제주도보다는 약간 북측으로 현해탄 건너 일본) 전망대에 섰다. 사진은 거문도 서도 목넘어 최남단의 전망대이다. When we arrives at Komu island, the shuttle bus from the hotel is waiting for us and we got on imediately. The buse crossed a small bridge linking the Jung island (Middle Island) and Seo island (West Island) and stopped at the hotel. As soon as checking in the hotel, I enquired the staff how to go for the lighthouse in the tip of island. After unloading our baggage, we walked for the lighthouse at around 4 PM. It was 2.5 km off the accomodation and took one hour to reach. On the way of the lighthouse, we were stopped by a point Mokneomeo linking the island with a small south island, which looked wild rocky and submerged by the sea. My wife was scared to cross it, so I walked down into the point and found a trail for the lighthouse from the point. She felt safe and we started to cross the point and hiked up the opponent small island where the lighthouse was built. On the way, it looked Japanese scenery as the island was full of a tropical trees. Making a detour at a mountain hill, we arrived at the lighthouse on the trail. My wife was hurridely went for a toilet for washing and resting and I went down and stood a observatory platform installed at the top of a southern most tip of cliff. It was the farthest south from Yosu, but not less than Cheju toward Japan Staraight.   The phot shows the observatory platform at the lighthouse. 

전망대 주변에는 일본에 의해 1905년 설치된 하얀 등대와 최근 설치된 대형 빨간 등대가 있었다. 바다를 내려다보니 정면으로 멀리 백도가 보였고 좌편으로 서도에 가려진 동도 산자락과 거기에 설치된 빨간 등대가 보였다. 아마도 한국에서 제일 고독한 장소에서 집사람도 합류하여 둘이서 푸른 전경을 한동안 음미하였고 나는 일순간 생전의 어머니의 밝게 웃으시는 표정을 떠 올렸다.  나의 어머니는 97년 평생동안 나와 동생들과 손자/손녀들을 돌보아주시고 잘못될까 걱정하시고 잘되도록 기도하시며 사랑으로 모든 것을 다 주신 후 금년 구정 초하루에 하늘나라로 가셨었다. 오후 5시 30분까지만 개방되기에 서둘러 Hotel로 귀환하였다. 오는 도중에 목너머에서 사진을 찍는데 집사람의 의상 상 노출부위에 엄청 많이 모기에 물렸고 바로 그 장소에 빗물이 고인 웅덩이가 썩어 많은 모기가 발생되는 장소였다. 저녁 6시가 넘으니 산에 가려서 컴컴해지기 시작했고 한 30분 이상 더 걷는 것이 무리여서 섬에 있는 Taxi를 불렀다. 비용은 두배정도 비싼 것 같았으나 편리하게 Hotel을 지나 다리를 건너 고도에 내렸다. 기사가 추천한 식당이 부둣가에 있어 갈치구이를 시켜 먹고 주변 가계에서 벌레 물린데 바르는 물약을 사서 바르고 걸어서 고도와 서도를 있는 다리를 지나 해안도로를 따라 20분정도 걸어서 Hotel에 도착했다.  사진은 거문도 등대이다. 왼쪽은 일본 식민지시대 때 설치되고 오른쪽은 근세에 설치되었다. Near the observatory platform, the white lighthouse installed in 1905 by Japan and the red one installed recently both were stood. When I looked over the sea, there was the Paek Island (White Islands) to the front and, on the left, there was a red lighthouse at the tip of Dong island ridge. I supposes we were standing on the most isolated point in Korea to watch out the sea, and I was thinking of my mother who passed away on the lunar new yeras day of this year and of her love and sacrifice toward me, my brothers, grandson and daughter. She leaved from the earth after giving all things and praying for us in her life time. We were hurried to return the hotel, as it was near  five o'clock and half hour PM, closing time. On the way of return, we took a photo at the Mokneomeo Linking Point, but my wife was bitten heavily by a herd of wild mosquitoes. It seemed to be a habitat of the insects as it has a lot of puddles where rainfalls were contained. Aa we walled, it was 6 o'clock PM and getting dark. I though it's too dark to walk for more 30 minutes walk to the hotel, so I called on an island taxi. Ths fare was double higher than expected, but we conveniently moved to the Jung( Center) Island as the car passed through the small bridge linking Seo Island. We had a supper of a roated hairtail at the restaurant the driver recommended and after meal bought a insect bite killer at a shop to treat my wife. 20 minutes walk crossing the bridge and along the shore leaded us to arrive the hotel. 2025.8.21 여행 Travel in August 21st, 2026

09:30 Check-out을 하고 Hotel Shuttle Bus를 타고 거도 연안여객선 부두에 도착하였다. 근처 부둣가에 아침식사 가능하다는 표식을 보고 들어가 갈치구이를 시켰다. 우리와 비슷한 연령대의 부부가 운영을 하며 남자가 주문을 받고 음식을 운반하였다. 어제 저녁에 먹었던 것보다 가격도 좀 저렴하고 밑반찬도 풍부하였다. 남자분은 우리가 타고 온 배편 가격이 굼금한지 탑승권을 보여달라 하였고 확인한 뒤 현재 정부 지원으로 운임의 50%로 다니고 있다 하였다.  여자분은 여수에서 시집와서 거문도에 줄곧 살고 있다 하며 탑승시간을 확인한 뒤 근처 부두에서 마을버스를 타면 동도까지 구경갔다 올 수 있다 하였다. 그러나 동도는 원래 계획에 없던 지역이었고 출발시간도 빠듯하여 포기하였다. At 9 o'clock and half hour AM, we checked out and got on the shuttle bus for the ferry terminal in Jung Island. Near the terminal, I found an indication, saying "Breakfast is available here." and came into it. We had the roasted tailfishes and found a couple looked our ages was running the restaurant while husband covered the hall and his wife covered the kitchen. The meal was far better than those one we had yesterday in terms of price and quality. The husband asked me to show a ticket of the ferry and told me that the current price could be half of its original price due to the government subsidy. The wife told us she had come from Yosu for marriage and kept living on since then. She also suggest us to tour Dong Island on the village bus after checking out the depart time, but we gave up, thinking of the tight schedule. 

식사 후 Café를 찾아 마을을 걸었고 한 작은 Cafe에서 Coffee를 마시고 있던 거문도에 사는 젊은 부부와 대화를 나누었다. 주로 거문도는 갈치잡이 및 원양어선의 전진기지로 한 때 매우 번창했고 어부로 있든 장사를 하든 돈을 많이 벌었다 한다. 일본 식민지시대 많은 일본인이 이주해와 일본식 주택을 지었고 지금도 그런 건축형태를 유지하고 있다 하였다. 그러나 해경이 섬에 들어오고 임검이 심해지면서 불법 취업자 등 고용이 어려워지자 고기잡이가 어려워지기 시작했다 하였다. 거문도에 대하여 굼굼한 점을 물어보라 하여 영국군 묘지와 관련된 역사공원을 물었는데 꽤 상세하게 답변해주었다. After lunch, we strolled to find a cafe, and at a small cafe, we shared about the island with a couple of young villagers. The island once was flourish with the fishing of hairfish and an advance port of ocean fishing. Everybody could get a lot of money, and in time of Japanese colony, many emmigrants from Japan lived with their Japanese hosuses which were still remained. However, the life of the island was getting worse, when the maritime police unit came to the island and initiated tougher inspection and check any illegal empoyment. He asked me of any question about the island, so I replied him with my interest of British Graves and its relics. He answered quite kindly about it. 

11:00경 Café를 나와 영국군 묘지를 찾아 나섰다. 마을길에서 이정표가 보였고 따라서 샛길을 한참 오르니 바다가 보였다. 조금 더 걸으니 거문초교가 나왔는데 이곳이 당시 영국군 막사가 있었다고 전해져서 교정안으로 들어섰다. 햇볕이 뜨거워져서 집사람은 교실 옆 그늘에 앉아 쉬었고 나는 잔디가 깔린 운동장을 건너 교실로 올라가 주변을 내려다보았다. 정면으로 서도와 남단의 목넘어로 연결된 등대가 있는 외딴섬이 보였다. 특히 우리가 묵었던 Hotel 밑 해변가에 당시 한 일본인 사업가가 멸치 건조 작업장으로 위장하여 젊은 여자들을 데려와 매춘 사업을 하였다 한다. 한 영군군 수병이 밤에 막사를 몰래 빠져나와 작은 배를 타고 이 곳으로 가다가 발각되면서 급히 달아나다 전복되어 익사하였다 하며 그의 무덤이 이곳에 한동안 유지되었다 한다. 사진은 영국군 막사가 있었던 거문 초교이다. At 11 AM, out of the cafe, we started to look for the British Graves. On the street, we could identify the guide post directing the British Historical Park and walked up along the trail to the point where we could see sea. A little more walk leaded us to the Komun Primary School which was addressed as a military barracks in time of Port Hamilton.  It's very hot in day time, so my wife took a rest at a shadow point and I crossed the playground and walked up to the class buildings for looking down. To the front, I could see the small island, where the lighthouses were installed, linked with Seo Isaland through Mokneomeo was seen. On the shore beneath the hotel we stayed, it was addressed that a prostituition facility camouflaged for fishing was set up by Japanese business man with Japanese whores. On night, a British soldier secretly leaked from his barrack and rowed a small boat to go there, but when he was discovered, he tried to run away and turned his boat upside down to his drowning. His grave was preserved in this island for a time. The photo shows the Komun Primary School where the British barracks were established.

학교를 나와 영국군 역사공원 이정표를 보면서 한 30분 걸어 오르니 영국군 묘지가 보였고 3기의 비석이 유지되고 있었다.  익사한 Thomas 수병의 묘는 보이지 않았으나 작전중에 총기사고로 사망한 다른 수병의 묘소가 있었다. 전체 9기가 있었으나 현재는 3기만 유지되었고 매년 영국 대사관에서 추모식을 갖는다 전해진다.  묘소 주변으로 공원화 하였으나 현재는 관리가 잘 되지 않아 잡초가 무성하고 모기가 들끓었다. 현 묘지는 일본인들이 이장해 온 것으로 원래는 고도 동쪽 끝단에 조성되었다 한다. 아마도 당시 사체는 현 Terminal이 있는 곳에 군함들이 정박했기에 여기서부터 운반되어 막사가 있는 거문 초교를 거쳐 희양봉 전망대가 있는 능선으로 옮겨져서 섬의 동쪽 끝단으로 운구되어 묻혔을 것이다. 희양봉 전망대는 아마도 영국군이 Russia 군함 등 감시하기위한 감시장소로 사용되었을 것으로 추정된다. 영국군 묘지를 확인한 후 나와 집사람은 능선으로 올라 희양봉 전망대 방향으로 걸었다. 산길은 있었지만 사람들의 왕래가 없어 잘 보이지 않았고 가는 길에 모기떼가 극심하였다. 특히 집사람은 One-Piece를 입고 있었는데 노출된 부위가 많아 더 많이 모기에 물렸다. 내가 앞장서고 집사람이 따르며 능선을 타고 걸었고 전망대에 도달해 주변 경관을 확인하였다. 멀리 북쪽에 서도와 동도가 보였고 그 사이로 서도항과 고도 앞 바다가 펼쳐졌다. 이곳에 와서 보니 확실히 이 곳은 영국군의 해양 감시 장소임이 확실해졌다. 묘지근처에서 찍어 두었던 안내도를 보고 여기서 능선아래로 내려가 거문 초교로 가려고 했으나 가는 길이 잡풀로 뒤덮여 보행이 불가하였고 불가피 서쪽으로 능선을 타고 부두와 마을이 있는 곳으로 이동을 하여야 했다. 그러나 이 곳부터는 길이 거의 잡풀로 뒤덮여 내가 먼저 걸어 나가며 길을 확인하였고 이어서 집사람과 같이 이동하였다. 묘소로부터 약 1시간 능선을 타고 걸어서 오후 1시 반경 겨우 마을에 도착하였고 모기에 물린 곳에 약을 발랐다.   사진은 거문도 고도의 영국군 수병 묘소이다. Out of the school, we walked up along a trail to the guidepost direction for 30 minutes and found three graves with its tombstones. There was no grave for the drowned soldier but other graves for thw one killed in action. Three graves have preserved among total nine graves and at every year, the British ambassy holds a memorial prayer for it. These graves yards were changed to a historical park but it looked not to be managed well as there were many mosquitos and weeds. It was said that these gaves were relocated by Japanese from a eastern most tip of the island. It is supposed to transport the dead body from a ship via Komun Primary School and here then trasported up to the Heeyang Peak on the ridge and futher moved to the eastern tip of the island for burial. The peak was supposed to be used by British for an observatory point for identifying any Russian movement. After checking the graves, we hiked up straight up to a ridge and walked to the direction of Heeyang Observatory Point. Though there was a trail along the ridge, but it was full of mosquitos and covered with weeds and hard to identify. Specially, my wife was heavily bitten by mosquitos as she weared her one-piece dress exposing arms and legs. I leaded her and arrived at the observatory point to look out the sea. I can see the Se isalnd with its harbour and Dong island  and between these island there was blue sea laid out from this Go island.  While I was standing here, I was sure that this point was a British observatory point. I checked the map taken at the graves yards and tried to hiked down to the primary school but it was impossible due to the trail full of weeds. I had to follow the trail to the west where there was harbor and leaded my wife and for about one hour walking through the weeds. We arrived at a village and treat our bitten skins with a fluid medicine. The photo shows the graves for the British soldiers. 

우선적으로 마을에서 Café를 찾았고 집사람은 팥빙수를 시키고 나는 Coffee를 시켜 먹으며 얼굴에 난 땀을 씻고 휴식을 취했다. Ferry 승선이 오후 3시 반이기에 약 2시간 여유가 있었는데 마침 남자 둘이서 Café에 들어왔다. 그들은 서도의 불탄 봉을 등반하고 내려오던 길이었고 나와 비슷한 나이로 한 명은 전자회사 임원, 또 한 명은 회계사였다. 회사의 회계감사를 대행하면서 알게 되면서 친해졌고 정기적으로 만나 전국을 순회한다 하였다. 이 때 또 한 명의 마을 주민이 들어왔는데 거문도에 대해 여러가지 이야기를 들려주었고 이러다 보니 2시간이 흘러서 우리는 cafe를 나와 배를 타러 갔다. First of all, we looked for the cafe and have a bowl of red bean ices and a cup of coffee and took a rest. Our return ferry was scheduled to depart at 3 o'clock and half hour so we had extra 2 hours. Two men in climbing gears came into the cafe, one of who was a retired man and the other was a financial account. They had acquaintance with each other when working in company before retirement and periodically toured around the peninsular. One local man came into the cafe and introduced us many things about the island. It's clse to the depart time, so we came out of the cafe for the ferry terminal. 

점심을 먹지 않아 출출해졌는데 집사람은 괜찮다 하여 나만 인근 가계에 들러 과자와 음료수를 사서 점심을 대체하였다. 어차피 올 때 겼었던 멀미현상을 예방하기 위해서는 식사를 하지 않는 것이 좋을 것 같았다. Ferry는 예정데로 거문도항을 출항하였고 서도항을 거친 후 초도와 나로도를 경유하여 오후 6시경 여수항에 도착하였다. 인근에서 저녁식사를 하고 오후 7시경 26번 시내버스를 타고 미리 예약해 둔 Pension이 있는 화양면 이목리로 향하였다. 이러한 시내버스는 하루에 3-4차례 밖에 운행을 하지 않아 시간을 맞추기 어려운데 여수 종점근처에 정류소가 있어 잘 탔지만 26-1번 버스를 타지 않아서 밤 8시 반경 종점에 도착하여 Pension까지 밤길에  30분 걸어야만 했다. 멀리 조발도를 있는 대교가 보였으나 길이 어두워 집사람이 휴대폰의 조명을 켜서 길을 밝히며 숙소에 도착하였다. Without a lunch, I felt hungry but my wife told me OK, so I dropped by a grocery shop nearby and had some snacks and beverage. I thouht it's good for the sea sick I had felt. The ferry departed as scheduled and arrived at Yosu harbor at 6 o'clock PM via Seo island, Cho island, and Naro island.  We had suppers at nearby restaurant and took a number 26 city bus for our pension in Hwayang-myon, Imok-ni. The bus was run only 3 or 4 time a day so it's hard to meet the time. Though we could get on well at 7 o'clock PM but we miss the number 26-1 bus and had to walk for 30 minutes along the shore at night after arrival at 8 o'clock and half hour PM. We could see a grand bridge, Chobal, but it's too dark to see the road. My wife turned on a flash in her cellur phone, and we could scarcely arrive the accomodation. 

2025.8.22 여행 Travel in August 22, 2025

아침 일찍 일어나 7시경 조발대교 800 m를 포함 총 4 km를 걸어서 걸어서 조발도에 있는 전망대에 도착하였다. 이곳 Pension에서는 Taxi를 호출하는데 너무 비싸서 섬에 가려면 다른 수단이 없었다. 섬을 연결하는 마을 버스가 있다고는 들었으나 현지에서 확인한바 운행되지 않았다.  화양면 이목리에서 조발대교까지 해안도로에 차량이 거의 없어서 걷는데 안전했고 대교역시 보행로가 구비되어 안전하게 조발도로 걸어갈 수 있었다. 올 때 미리 확인해둔 여수가는 시내버스가 Pension 앞에서 오전 10시 반에 출발하기에 약 2시간 정도에서 조발도 탐방을 마쳐야 했다. 전망대로 오르며 내가 40여년전 근무했던 해안초소를 찾고자 했으나 감이 오지를 않았다. 내 기억에 당시 조발도 서쪽 항에 도착하여 동쪽을 향하여 길을 걷다가 해안가 바위를 좀 타고 해안초소에 도착했던 것으로 어렴풋이 생각이 들뿐이었다. 그렇다면 이곳 전망대에서 좀더 동쪽으로 밭을 가로질러 해안가로 나아가 초소가 있었다 추정되었으나 시간이 제한되어 더 이상 탐방이 어려웠다. 아무튼 이곳 동쪽 끝단의 어디선가 나는 야간에 탐조등(Search Light)를 돌리며 대 간첩 침투작전에 일조하였고 야간에 근무하다 초소 밖에서 감시하던 동료가 자기 발에 M1소총을 오발하여 난리가 났었고 우리 분대원 모두 여수 별량면 중대 본부로 호출되어 군기교육을 받았던 기억도 난다. 이곳 조발도 근무는 부모님이 논산훈련소에서 영광으로 배치받아 홍농의 중대본부에서 각개전투 훈련받는 모습을 보고 기겁하여 어머님이 주변 경찰관에 문의하여 근무환경이 좀더 나은 곳으로 전보시켜 주신 것이며 여기서 다른 대원보다 대학 2년 재학에 따른 혜택으로 4개월 먼저 제대를 하게 되었다. 집사람과 같이 전망대에 있는 Cafe에서 Coffee를 시켜 서둘러 마시고 다시 걸어서 대교를 지나 Pension으로 복귀했다. 오면서 당시 초소에 근무하며 통통배를 빌려 우리 분대원이 화양면 장등에 있는 화양중학교로 추정되는 곳으로 축구하러 왔던 기억을 되살리며 위치를 확인하고자 했다. 사진은 조발도 전망대에서 동쪽 끝단 바다를 보여준다. I woke up early at 7 o'clock AM and walked along the road paralled with the shores for 4 km incluning the length of Chobal Grand Bridge 800 meters for exploration of Chobal island where I had served for military. There was no way to walk here because it's too expensive to call a taxi. I checked the town bus hoping islands on the internet, but it's not available on site. It's quite safe to walk from Imok-ni, Hwayang-myon to the bridge as there was few cars and on the bridge providing walkway. We had to complete the exploration within 2 hours as the city bus for Yosu was scheduled to stop at 10 o'clock and half hour in front of the pension. While I was hiking up to the observatory point, I tried to figure out the point of military post where I had worked but failed. In my thought, upon arrival at the port, I had walked from the port eastward to the edge of the island presumably supposed to be near here, walking through shore rocks to the post. It was only supposed the post had been located over the paddies and over the ridge near the shore. It's impossible to explore anymore due to the time limit. Somewhere near here, I had worked to run a search light for detecting any infiltrating guerrila boat and one night one of my commrade shot himself mistakenly on his boot. Our scout was called in the head quarter in Yosu and trained for principal at that time. In the first time of my military service, my parent visited for interview with me and saw me training at a mountain in Youngkwang and surprised to the level of training about a individual combat skill. My mother managed to arrange a more safer site with consulting with a police officers and could relocate me to this site. In this island, I could be released from my duty 4 month earlier than my military classmates due to the benefit of my college career. We had hurriedly cups of coffee and walked back to the pension. On the way of return, on the bridge, I tried to look out over the shore and figured out that out scout had crossed this staright on a boat and played soccer game with local youths at a school called as Hwayang Middle School. The picture shows the eastern tip of Chobal Island over which my search light  post had been located. 

Pension에 젊은 아주머니가 나와서 우리가 버스를 기다리는 동안 말벗이 되어 주셨는데 자기 남편이 반데에도 불구하고 지인의 권유로 동업하여 이 사업을 하게 되었고 Pool-villa식 구조를 갖추면서도 저렴하게 하여 고객을 끌고자한다 하였다. 그러나 인천의 부모님이 있는 고향이 너무 멀어서 그것이 단점이라고 말하였다. 버스는 10시 30분에서 약간 지연되어 도착하여 승차하였고 약 1시간 반에 걸쳐서 바닷가의 구 도로를 경유하면서 많은 정류소를 거쳐 여수의 연안여객선 근처에 도착하게 되었다.   정오가 되어 인근 식당에서 바다장어 구이로 점심을 먹고 Taxi를 타고 여수Expo역에 도착하였다. 귀경하는 KTX가 오후 3시 20분경 출발하기에 약 2시간 인근 Cafe에서 Coffee를 시켜 먹으며 쉬다가 용산역에는 오후 6시 30분 도착했다. 역사 내 식당에서 순대국밥을 시켜 먹고 지하철을 타고 집에 도착하니 어느덧 밤 9시 30분이 되었다.  While we were waiting the city bus for Yosu, the wife of pension owner came to us and shared a talking with us, said, "She reject her husband about this business suggested by husband's friend. But he insisted and invested for this pension with a strategy providing the pool villa accomodation but low price. Oner of the problem is to visit her parent in Inchon." The bus arrived at around 10 o'clock and half hout AM and ran for one and half hour to arrive at Yosu Terminal along the old roads near the shores. It's noon so we had lunches of roasted eels and then took a taxi for Expo Yosu Station. Considering the departure time, we took a rest a cafe near the station. We arrived at Yongsan Station at 6 o'clock and half hour PM and had dinners of black sausages soups. At 9 o'clock and half hour PM, we arrived home on the subway.
