Driving and exploring the North Battle Places

On the Friday morning as date of 24 Aug. 2018, I and my wife applied for one day company leave took the highway between South Kuri and Pochon for enjoying a retreat off home. On last Sunday, my car was out of order in a country 70 Km off home and transported by a wrecker vehicle at costs. I wanted to inspect the automatic transmission of my car repaired during driving and wanted to visit the northern area known as the defeated place, Sachang-ri and Buk-myon of ROK 6th division during Korean war in time of the Chinese spring offensive battle.

We started at 10:00 am and dropped by the Pochon service area in the highway to take lunch. We took our lunch box and enjoyed a pack of fried chicken from Lotteria. We kept on driving till we drove off Sinbuk IC, the final IC of the highway and kept on driving on the 43th national road. At Mansae cross road, we changed the 37th national road and drove about 10 minutes in the distance of 6 Km for Il-dong on the eastern area through Ildong tunnel.

We drove the 368th provincial road for Kimhwa via Il-dong and Eh-dong famous for the seasoned barbecue ribs and drove 15 Km for 30 minutes to change the road for Paekun valley between the south ridge of Myungsong mountain and Paekun mountain. Passing by the valley, we had to drive over the pass between the north and south sub-mountain ridges of Paekun mountain.  After the pass, we drove down the cross road for Kimhwa, Chunchon(Sachang-ri) and Kapyong(Buk-myon).  I thought there was no road to cross southward for kapyong between Hwaak mountain and Chunchon lake but the road had been established.

I was hesitating to go for Schang-ri near the cross road or Kapyong, but I thought Kapyong was good for me to see the retreat course of the 6th ROK army and fierce resistance place of RAA and Canadian special force to protect the rear of UN positions. I drove for 20 Km for 40 minutes to the Buk-myon of Kapyong where RAR memorial park was formed.

I visited the battle place of RAA and took pictures referred to below.

After exploring the battle place, I drove again southward for kapyong and Seoul and dropped by Canadian memorial park to take some pictures referred to below.

I got back home at 19:00 pm and found there was no problem on my car.

Thank RAR Battalion and Canadian Patricia Light Infantry Battalion for their sacrifices.
