One Day Visit of Deokju Temple in Wolak National Mountain Park
We started to drive for the Deokju Temple to explore the trail of the Prince MaEui and Princess DeokJoo, a brother and sister of the last King KyungSoon of Shila Dynasty around AD 1100 .
It took 2.5 hours from the East Seoul to the temple, driving on the Yongdong express way firstly and Jungbu Inland express way secondly. It's so good to drive in deep valley in the national park, where few vehicle ran.enjoying a stream of cool mountain wind. Before, we explored the trail, we had a lunch packed by home at the car in the temple parking lot.
The prince and princess departed secretly from the father and mother, King and Queen of Shilla who decided to surrender to the Korea Dynasty, on the way of Kaeseong, the capital city of Korea Dynasty.
They fled from the group to hide in the Keumkang Mountain Area, and tried to find the chance to recover their dynasty there. One the way of their escape, the prince and princess stayed in the Wolak Mountain where the Deokju Temple was built up.
It has been addressed that the Prince MaiEui leaved for the Mountain Kumkang as planned, but his sister, the Princess of Seokju had to stay due to her illness. She had prayed for her brother and dynasty at the temple and Buddha statue constructed near the temple until she died.
It took one hour to hike from the temple to the Buddha located upward at the Upper Deokju at a distance of 2 kilometers. In the way of the statue, we could find the traces of the Deokju Mountain Fortress used for military purposes dynasty by dynasty. The temple built by the Buddha were destroyed to prevent North Korean guerillas from utilizing a shelter, by the Division 8 of Korean Army in the Korean War.
It was so interesting to see a creek of the valley full of mountain stones presumably rolled down form the destroyed mountain fortress and the Buddha statue constructed on the civil work. It can be supposed that the recovered temple was made of that stones easily available in the nearby creek.
On the way of home in the East Seoul, we dropped by the cafeteria called as Crocodile Island, observing down the good view of the Chungju Lake from the parking lot of the cafeteria. It so good too to have some boiled corns available in the canteen, which is famous for its excellent taste.
We returned back at 9:30 p.m. after having dinner at a service area on the express way.
You can enjoy to hike down the Ecosystem Trail formed along the road in the valley, seeing the East Gate of Deokju Mountain Fortress, as an alternative to replace the exploration of the Buddha locating upward.
