미 24사단 유성 금고동 금강 및 세종 전의면 개미고개 전투지 (1950.7.9-12 및 2026.3.9-11) 탐방 Exploration of Kum River Battle Line around Kumgo-dong and Kaemi Pass Battle Site in Jeonui (July 9 to 12, 2025 and Mar 9 to 11, 2026)

 

회사의 출장업무가 2025년 9월 24일부터 시작하여 30일까지 대전에서 시행되어 업무 끝나고 여가시간을 활용하여 인근한 금강전투지 중 미 24사단 19연대가 방어하던 대평리(현 세종시 남단) 방어선의 가장 우측 끝지점인 금곡동 갑천과 금강의 합류점을 탐방하였다. I utilized my business trip in Taejon from Sep 24 to 30 to explore the far right sector of Kum River Battle Defensive Line covered by the 19th Regiment, 24th US Army Division, which is in Saejong City and a confluence of Kum River and Kab Creek.

이 지역은 낮은 구릉으로 이어진 산악지역인데 지난 7월 탐방 시 시간이 없어 가지 못했던 지역이며 현재는 매립장과 쓰레기 처리시설 등이 들어서 있었다. 1950년 7월 중순 당시 대평리 전선은 병력부족으로 세종시를 동서로 가르는 공주에서부터 시가지 동측의 개화산까지 진지를 구축하고 있었으나 미호강과 합류되는 합강정부터 남쪽으로 탄천이 합류되는 지점까지는 공백인 상태였다. This area was not visited by me in July trip due to time limit and it is a rolling places consisted of mountains. This area is installed with a landfill site and garbage treatment facilities. In time of the middle of July 1950, this area was not coverd by the 24th Division's defensive linedue to the shortage of military power, though the line was quite defended from Kongju to east and Kaehwa Mountain in the eastern sector of the city. So, from the confluence of Habgangjeong to this area were no man's land.

탄천이 금강과 합류되는 지점에는 신탄진 철교가 국도1호선을 따라 위치하고 있어 한 개 중대가 배치되어 있었고 개화산까지 약 18 Km의 굽이진 강이 놓여있었으다. 북한군은 바로 이 취약한 지점을 이용하여 은밀하게 도강을 하였다. 그리고 개화산의 대대 저지선을 우회 돌파하여 세종시 남단으로 이동 서쪽의 방어대대 및 연대 지휘부와 후방 포대를 공격하였다. This confluence was along the national road and near Sintanjin Railway Bridge. It was 18 km off the Kaehwa Mountain and only reconnaisened by one company. North Korean force targeted this weak point to cross the river stealthily. They went round the Kaehwa Battalion to infiltrate into the rear defensive battalion position, regiment head quarter and artillery.

금곡동 방어선에 있던 중대는 금강전투 시 중공군의 공격을 받지 않은 상태로 경계 중에 있다가 공주와 세종의 전선이 뚫려 포위가 시작되었을 때 후퇴명령이 떨어졌다. 그들은 도강한 북한군의 공격에 고전하던 개화산 중대전선에 합류하여 전투에 참여하며 용수천을 따라 남세종 IC를 지나 남단으로 연결되는 유성으로 후퇴하였다. The reconnaisence company at the confluence was not engaged in the battle commencement and ordered to retreat to join in the Kaehwa Battalion when the defensive line was started to infiltrated. The battalion fought and retreated along Yongsu Creek to Youseong near South Saejong IC, went rounding Tapyong-ni (Saejong) to the east.

북한군은 대평리 방어선의 가장 서측인 중근봉 북단 (영곡리) 산자락 아래 금강을 통하여 북한군이 대거 도강할 수 있었기에 그들은 남쪽 구릉지대를 통과하여 연대 지원포대가 있는 용담리와 두만리 일대로 진출하여 유성으로 가는 길목을 차단하였다. 후퇴하는 미 연대병력은 용수천을 따라 올라오는 북한군의 추격을 받아 포위가 되었고 유성으로부터 구출대가 출발하였으나 병력과 장비에 대한 피해가 크게 발생하였다.  North Korean force could cross massively at the foot hill of Jungkeun Peak (Youngkog-ni), the western tip of Taepyong-ni Defensive Line on the left side of Yongsu Creek and passed southward through rolling hills for rouding up Yongdam-ni and Tuman-ni where the supporting artillery of the regiment was stationed. The retreating US Regiment was chased and encircled by North Korean. Though they were supported by a rescuing unit from Youseong but greatly damaged by the attack.

2025년 9월 29일 및 30일 오후 금고동으로 차를 몰고 가서 금고동 산성과 연한 강안까지 접근하였다. 간선도로에서 떨어져 있고 접근로는 협소하였으나 의외로 마을이 발달하였고 차량도 빈번하였다. 마을 공터에 차를 데고 걸어서 강안으로 접근하면서 위치를 확인하니 강 건너가 현도면 매곡리였고 한라시멘트로 보이는 공장이 보였다. 금강은 갈수기 때문인지 강폭은 좁아 보였으나 고수부지가 넓어 우기 때는 큰 강이 될 것으로 보였고 대청호가 생기기 전 625전쟁때는 평상 시 강이 더 큰 상태에서 우기가 되어 북한군의 도강을 억제하는 역할을 했을 것으로 생각되었다. 주요 중대 지휘본부는 금고동 산성으로 생각하였으나 시간이 부족해 숙소로 복귀하였다. I drove my car up to the riverside of Kum River near Kumgo-dong Fortress in Sep. 29 to 30, 2025, in the afternoon.

이 지역은 2026년 3월 9일부터 11일까지 다시 업무차 방문하게되어 좀더 자세하게 탐방하게 되었다. 특히 금고동 산성이 있는 불무산과 바로 근처에 있는 금강과 대전시를 통과한 갑천이 합류하는 지점 및 신탄진철교가 대상이었다. 숙소를 신탄진역 근처에 잡았기에 저녁식사 후 금강으로 나아가 철교를 확인하고 서쪽방향으로 고수부지를 걸어 1시간 정도 가니 탄천과의 합류점이 있었다. 바로 이 지점의 불무산 능선이 금강전투 시 미 24사단 19연대 한 중대본부가 배치되어 신탄진철교를 통한 북한군의 진격을 감시하던 지역으로 추정되었다. 당시 세종시 남단의 시가지 개화산부터 서쪽으로 공주까지는 미 24사단이 방어선을 구축하고 있었으나 동쪽에 있는 이곳까지는 미 24사단 병력이 배치되지 않았었다. 특별히 이곳에 병력을 파견한 이유는 단지 현재도 존재하는 경부선 철도 및 17번 국도상의 신탄진철교 및 다리를 감시하기 위함이었다고 한다. 이 지역은 청주에 주둔하는 한군군의 방어지역인데 미군의 입장에서 방어 경계선에 대한 감시를 강화하여 북한군의 우회 후방침투에 대비하고자 한것으로 추정되었다. 불무산에서 도보로 1시간정도에 신탄진철교가 있으니 아마도 정찰대가 주기적으로 강변을 따라 정찰을 했을것으로 추정된다. 아래 사진은 금강과 갑천이 합류하는 불무산 하단을 현행 Drone 비행장이 있는 강변에서 찍은 것이며 또 하나는 신탄진철교를 보여준다. This area could be explored deeply again as I had opportunity to visit again for my business from Mar 9 to 11, 2026. The confluence of Kun River and Kab Creek by Pulmu Mountain with Kumgo Fortress and Sintanjin Railway Bridge was targeted to explore. As I stayed a hotel near Sintanjin Station, it could be possible to reach the confluence by one hour walking along the river trail to the west. This point was supposed to be the commanding post of a company dispatched from the 19th US regiment, along the ridge line of Pulmu Mountain, watching over the railway bridge likely to be used by advancing North Korean forces. In time of the battle, the defensive line was established from Kongju to Kaehwa Mountain in Tapyong-ni(Saejong) along the river but, as mentioned, this area were not defended by the line. Main mission of the company was reconnaisence of the railway bridge and the national road ran paralled with the railway. This point was in charge of South Korean forces in Cheongju but regarded so important to the US Division about any possibility of rear infiltration, executing reconnaisencence mission. It was one hour walking distance from the bridge, so the US company periodically patrolled to the bridge.

2025년 9월 30일 업무가 계획보다 다소 일찍 끝나 서울로 귀경하며 전의 전투지(개미고개)를 탐방하는 기회로 활용하고자 했다. 신탄진에서 출발하여 개미고개까지는 약 40km 로 한 시간정도 소용되었다. 신탄진 IC에 진입하여 경부고속도로를 타고 북쪽으로 달리다 청주 IC를 빠져나와 서쪽으로 오송 및 조치원을 경유하여 1번 국도를 탔다. 곧이어 개미고개가 나타나서 전투기념비가 웅장하게 보였고 주차장까지 조성되어 차를 주차하였다. 아래 산들은 고개전투 기념비 시설을 보여준다. As my business job got done earlier than my schedule, I had an opportunity to use a time for exploring Cheonui Battle Point (Kaemi Pass Battle). Leaved from Sintanjin, it took one hour to drive for 40 km to the pass. Entered into Sintanjin IC and drove on the Kyungbu Expressway northward and got out of the way at Cheonju IC. I drove westward and passed through Osong and Chochiwon. I could drove northward on the national road #1 and soon reached at the Kaemi Pass. The gigantic battle monument was appeared and it was good to park my car. The photo shows the memorial facilities one of which was figuring a soldier was dying on the lap of his commrade praying for him.

미 24사단 21연대가 표식된 기념비가 중앙에 서있고 좌우에 각 전투하는 병사의 기념상과 죽어가는 전우의 고개를 받히면서 바라보는 병사의 기념상이 설치되어 있었다. 특별히 좌측으로 약간 떨어져 한 켤레 신던 군화와 M1 총과 철모가 조각상으로 설치되어 이곳 전의 전투 및 개미고개 전투에서 희생된 많은 21연대 병사들을 추모하고 있다 생각되어 숙연한 마음이 들었다. 기념비 뒷면으로는 이 지역에서 대한민국을 위해 전사한 미군들의 이름이 대리석 벽면에 새겨져 있었고 수를 셀 수 없이 많았다. 300명이 넘는 전사자 수치로 보인다. 운주산 최남단 산자락 밑에 기념비가 세워져 있고 국도를 넘어서는 절벽이 형성되고 그 밑으로 철길이 지나고 있었다. 전투 시에도 이 지형은 625 전쟁 때도 동일할 것으로 추정되었고 그래서 이 고개가 전략적으로 중요하다 생각되었다. 북한군으로서는 최단시간에 대전으로 진격하여 경상도와 전라도를 점령하려면 전의의 개미고개를 돌파해야 했을 것이고 미군의 입장에서는 어떻게 든 전의를 사수하여야 했을 것이다. 전의는 서쪽으로 예산, 동쪽으로 청주 그리고 남쪽으로 공주와 세종(대평리)로 연결되어 당시의 교통망으로 교통의 요지임이 틀림없었다. 아래사진은 기념비 옆에 설치된 조각상을 보여준다. In the facilities, there was monument indicating the mark of the 21st Regiment, 24th US Army Division. On the left, a patrol unit of soldiers monument were erected and on the right, the dying soldier monument as mentioned is erected.  Far left, o pair of boots, M1 rifle and helmet were sculpted for paying tribution to the fallen soldiers from the 21st regiment and struck me with reverence. On the back of monument, many names up to 300 were scuplted for the fallen here at this pass. Geopraphically, the monument was installed at the lower edge of Unju Mountain range and the national road ran closely by the monument. On the right side of the road, there was a cliff and a railway under the road. In this condition, the advancing North Korean force had to move throu this pass, so this point was tactically important at the battle. Here on the pass, the North Koreans should move fastly to occupy Cheolla and Kyungsang Provinces and the Americans had to resist for buying time for establishing Taejon Battle defensive line. The small town of Cheonui was linked with Aesan to the west, Cheongju to the east, and Saejong (Taepyong-ni in time of the battle) and Kongju to the south. 전투상황을 확인하기 위해 기념비 우측으로 산길이 나 있어서 걸어 올라갔다. 중간쯤 오르다 보니 산 아래에서 올라오는 길모퉁이가 보였고 이 능선을 따라 전의 쪽을 보면서 21연대 3대대가 방어선을 폈으리라 생각되었으나 산길에 잡초가 우거지고 뱀들이 나타날 것 같아 포기하고 내려오면서 주변을 조망하였다. 2015년까지 미군들의 유해가 발굴되었다고 하며 아마도 이곳 운주산 능선과 기슭일 것이다. 아래 사진은 기념비 뒷편 능선에서 본 정경이다.  To explore deeply, I hiked up a trail on the right side of monument and could see a street corner down from the hill where the 3 battalion of 21st regiment had established supposedly their defensive line. I had to give up more exploring the hill because of danger of snakes in the bushes. It is said the American remains had found up to the year 2015 here and neighbouring hills of Unju Mountain. The photo shows the traffic guide post at the street corner seen from the hill behind the monument.  

뱀고개 탐방을 마치고 전의 시가지로 주행하니 한 십여분 후 전의역에 도착하여 주차를 하였다. 이곳은 일본에서 하루 전 부임한 34연대장이 직접 Rocket 포를 어깨에 메고 북한군 탱크와 대적하다 전사한 곳이기도 하다. 이 역사는 625때도 존재했을 것이다. 마침 역사 앞에 coffee shop이 있어 한잔 마시면서 주변을 둘러보았다. 전의역 직전에 오른쪽 낮은 야산이 있었고 도로와 철길 좌측으로 Bear Tree Park 시설이 있었는데 이곳이 바로 21연대 1대대의 1차 방어선이었다. 북한군이 새벽 안개속에서 은폐를 하며 기습해 올 때 박격포와 야포의 지원을 받으며 북한군의 탱크를 앞세운 공격을 격퇴하였으나 계속된 공격과 우회한 후방침투 시도로 말미암아 방어선이 뚫렸다. 그러나 3대대가 공격하며 방어선을 회복하였고 1대대가 조치원 북단으로 철수하도록 엄호하면서 이 후 3대대가 2차 저지선인 개미고개로 복귀하여 치열하게 지연전을 전개하였다 한다. 전의를 방어하지 못하면 바로 인접한 신탄진에서 충주 등 동쪽 국군진지에 보급이 차단될 수 있어 진지를 고수하고 있었는데 북한군은 미 공군 항공포격과 1차 저지선을 공격하며 피해가 컸던 3사단을 대체하여 4사단이 신규로 진출하며 미 3대대 진지를 포위 유린하였으며 대대장과 참모들 역시 전사하였다 한다. 아래 사진은 전의역 전경을 보여준다. 그리고 전의전투 시 배치된 부대 위치를 보여준다. After exploring, I drove for about 10 minutes and parked my car at the Cheonui Raiway Station where the 34th regimental commander who came here one day ago from Japan took a rocket launcher on his shoulder and died in the fighting off a North Korean tank. The staion surely saw the fact in time of the battle. There was a cafeteria, so I enjoyed a cup of coffee and looked around. I could see the hills in front of the station and Bear Tree Park below the station, the first defensive line of the 1st battalion of 21st regiment. The battalion could resist in the dawn under support of artillery and mortar fire powers, when North Korean force was attacking in a stream of deep mist but had to withdraw due to comtinuous attacks and danger of encirclement by bypass manuver of the North Koreans. But the 3rd battalion counter attacked fiercely to recover the position and guarded the 1st battalion withdrawing and moving south to the north Chochiwon. They moved down to the second resistance position of Kaemi Pass and resisted. But the new 4th division of North Korea appeared at the battle pass to repalce the 3rd division suffered for loss due to American air fires and the 1st round of the battle, the 1st battalion was outnumbered and destropyed heavily here at Kaemi Pass with dead commander and his staffs.  The photos shows the station and battle map indicated with the military unit and its position.

전장에서 승리하는 쪽에서 전투하는 것은 누구나 쉽게 할 수 있으리라 생각한다. 하지만 미 24사단처럼 적의 압도적인 화력과 병력에 대항하며 축차적으로 싸우며 후퇴하는 것은 심리적으로 육체적으로 너무도 어려운 일이었을 것이다.  내 주변에서 동료들이 피를 흘리며 부상속에 신음하며 죽어 나가고 적은 시시각각 다가와 죽음의 문턱에 서있고 군인의 명령은 수행되어야 하는 공포와 혼란속에서 작전을 수행하는 것은 보통의 병사로는 어려운 것이 틀림없다. 그러나 미 24사단 장병들은 국가의 부름에 따라 한 번도 듣지도 보지도 못했던 대한민국의 자유를 지키기 위해 이곳에서 용감하게 싸웠고 장렬하게 죽어서 그들의 사명을 완수하였다. 우리의 부모님들이 대부분 세상을 떠났으나 그 분들은 같은 나이에 70여년 먼저 큰 뜻을 위해 먼저 세상과 이별하였던 것이다. 부디 하나님이 주신 천부의 자유를 위해 국가의 부름에 따라 희생하였기에 그 분들의 부모와 가정에는 슬픔을 남길 수 있었으나 하나님의 뜻에 따른 사명을 완수하는 신실한 종의 소명을 다하여 천국에서 계실 것이라 굳게 믿는다. It is easy to fight well in the victory side, but as like as the 24th US Army Division, it is not easy to fight off the outnumbering enemy and retreat succesively round by round, in the sense of psychlogy and physic. The soldier facing his dying commrade with agony and blood by his side and approaching enemy had to stand on the death entrance but to carry out his mission in terror and confusion. The soldiers of the 24th US Army Infantry Division however bravely fought and completed their mission to death for the country they never saw and people they never met. Nowadays, our parents mostly passed away off the earth and the soldiers with the same age if they would live were fallen here 70 years before. They may remain sorrow in their family and parents, but they could be in heaven as they faithfully completed their mission God gave, as a servant of our Lord. 

전의 탐방을 마치고 동쪽 전동면 방향으로 주행하다가 북쪽 목천방향으로 주행해 나가니 병촌 순대마을이 있어 식사를 하고 귀경하면서 천안 먹거리인 호두과자를 샀다. 한때 책상 앞에서 막연하게 미 24사단과 21연대 장병들이 군인으로서 자질이 부족하다 라고 오해한 일이 있었다. 그러나 이번 전의와 금고동 산야를 탐방하며 그들이야 말로 가장 위급하고 위험한 상황에서 그 어떤 국가의 장병보다 용감하였고 죽음 앞에서도 초연이 군기를 잃지 않았음을 깨닫게 된 계기가 되었다.  After exploration, I drove from Choenui and for Cheondong where I drove northward for Mokcheon famous for Byongchon Black Sausage Town . I had a lunch and bought some Walnut Cakes there.  Once I misundersood that the 21st regimental soldiers were not deserved professional soldiers, but this exploration make me change my thought of them while I visited in the hills around Keumgo-dong mountains in North Taejon and Kaemi Pass. They were real soldiers in the fate of their urgent and critical battle situation and never losed the military principal in time no one helped and supported them to resist horrible North Korean advances.
