Always Be Faithful

Today, I am going to introduce the book, East of Chosin, written by Roy Appleman. Let me take you back to the winter of 1950, 75 years ago, at this season, to a place called Changjin Reservoir in Kaema Highland, North Korea, where unyielding courage met deadly catastrophe. The book, East of Chosin, tells the harrowing story of the 31 st U.S. Army Regiment Combat Team trapped east of the reservoir during the Korean War. The name, Chosin is Changjin in Japanese, as U.S. troops were provided with Japanese maps in the war. While the First U.S. Marine Divisions’ breakout on the west side of reservoir is well known, Appleman wrote this book to shed light on the forgotten soldiers of Task Force Faith’s men who were surrounded by Chinese forces on the east side of reservoir, outnumbered, and left to fight in subzero temperatures with diminishing supplies.   2025 년 7 월 9 일부터 11 일까지 2 박 3 일 경기도 양평군 양동에서 가족휴가를 마친 후 아쉬움에 아들에게 다음 기회에 강원도 양구에 숙소를 정해 놀러가자 했는데 의외로 빠르게 숙소를 예약했다 연락이 왔다 . 날짜는 2025 년 8 월 6 일부터 8 일까지 2 박 3 일로서 숙소는 양구군 동면에 있는 개구리펜션이었다 . 사실 양구를 언급한 것은 625 때 중동부전선의 치열한 격전지로 Punchbowl 전투 등 탐방이 용이한 점 때문이었다 . 또한 15 년 전 우리 아들이 입대하기 직전 양구와 같은 중동부전선 산악지역에 배치 받아 산을 타며 오르내리는 고된 근무환경에 사전 대비하기 위한 목적에서 방문했던 추억이 있기 때문이기도 하다 .   2025 년 8 월 6 일 수요일 13:00 아들차로 출발하였다 . 첫번째 목적지는 가평군 북면에 소재한 호주 및 New Zealand 전적비였다 . Olympic 도로를 타고 서울양양고속도로로 진입해서 화도 IC 에서 46 번 경춘국도를 타고 가평으로 주행하였다 . 가평에서 북으로 75 번 국도를 타고 주행을 하니 아들이 15 년 전 군입대하여 후반기 수송교육을 받던 야수대를 통과하여 Canada 가평전적비를 통과하여 호주 -NZ 전적비공원에 15:00 에 도착하였다 . 이 곳은 1951 년 4 월 하순경 사창리의 국군 6 사단이 중공군의 기습에 패퇴하면서 중부전선이 뚫려 중공군이 후방으로 침투하는 위기가 발생되면서 긴급하게 영연방 27 여단이 투입되어 중공군의 진입을 가평선에 막아낸 전투였다 . 한편 이곳은 우리 아들이 야수대 교육 시 최초로 외박을 나와서 경덕천 인근 펜션에서 묵으며 상봉했던 인연이 있기도 ...

In every summer, I and my wife with our son and his family used to go to Muju for a family reunion, because my mother’s birthday was in the middle of July. A condominium in the Muju Resort or a pension by the Gucheon-dong Valley was used for our family accommodation. The Nalin Poolvilla, Naos Pension, Songi Cottage and Tobis Condominium were typical facilities for our family while my father and mother were living.   In this year, a poolvilla of Lau Haus was reserved by my son and daughter, not in Muju but near Chipyong-myon. It was freely selected by them, because my mother had recently passed away on Lunar New Year’s Day on January 31 st, this year. Due to her age and mobility, Muju had always preferred to, and the days of family reunion were 1 night and 2 days.
