Always Be Faithful

The Capture of Seoul “ By the grace of a merciful Providence our forces fighting under the standard of that greatest hope and inspiration of mankind, the United Nations, have liberated this ancient city of Seoul.” DOUGLAS MACARTHUR (at Seoul, 29 September 1950) With the crossing of the Han River projected for 20 September, the drive on Seoul was about to begin. During the planning stages for the Inch'on landing, MacArthur had prophesied to Almond, "You will be in Seoul in five days." Almond replied, "I cannot do that but I will have the city in two weeks." [1] The plan for crossing the Han River called for Colonel Murray's 5th Marines to cross at the ferry site three miles northeast of Kimpo Airfield and eight miles west of Seoul. Happy Valley 전투에서 영국군은 157 명이 전사했다 . 원래 208 여명이 실종 되거나 전사한 것으로 믿어졌지만 며칠이 지나면서 생존한   영국군들이 귀환했고 나중에 포로가 되었던 몇몇 장병도 탈출하여 귀환하였다 .   중공군들은 영국군의 전사자들을 모두 방치하고 서울로 가버렸다 . Royal Ulster Rifle( 이하 RUR) 대대의 전사자는 그런 상태로 며칠 동안 방치되었다 .  주 전장이었던 삼하리의 농민들은 이렇게 유해를 놔두는 것은 생활에도 지장이 있고   인간의 도리도 아니니 합심하여 모두 매장하자는 말이 나와서 시간이 있는 대로   전사자들을 매장하였다 . 영하의 날씨 때문에 유해들이 부패하지 않은 것이 다행이었다 . 그렇게 매장한 묘지가 Happy Valley 에 10 여 곳이 넘었다 .   조금씩 날씨가 풀리는 2 월 하순이 되자 푸른 풀들이 싹트기 시작했다 .  이태호씨가 지금도 아픈 기억이 생생한 것은 RUR 대대원들을   매장한 묘지 위에서 다른 곳의 것들보다 더욱 무성하게 자라던   푸른 풀들의 애처러운 모습들이다 . RUR 대대 재향군인회 Som Association 의 사무총장   Carol Walker 여사가 이태호 노인을 방문했을 때 이 이야기를 들으며   가눌 수 없는 눈물을 떨구던 모습이 새롭다 .    3 월이 되자 중공군들은 물러가고 RUR 대대가 돌아왔다 .  그들은 한국인 통역을 통해 묘지의 위치를 확인했다 .  매장된 무덤 제보자에게는 약간의 보상금을 제공하기도 하였...
