Always Be Faithful

  I love to read and think of this meaning of the poem that moved a great general  so much that it had been posted always by him. It was General Douglas MacArthur who facilitated Ullman's popularity as a poet. He hung a framed copy of a version of Ullman's poem "Youth" on the wall of his office in Tokyo and often quoted from the poem in his speeches. The orginal poem is translated in my preference style to preserve its meaning accurately...       YOUTH 靑春 Samuel Ullman Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; 靑春이란 시간이 아닌 마음이어라 . 大田戰鬪는 여러 가지 특수한 사실로 한 전사의 한 페이지를 차지하고 있고 이렇게 결론이 맺는다 . “Dean 장군의 대전 사수로 하여 UN 군은 낙동강 방어선을 구축할 시간을 벌었고 대구 , 부산을 지킬 수 있었다 .” 삶을 살아가면서 자신의 위치와 존재를 이해하는 것은 삶의 목적과 가치를 규정하는데 필수적이다. 가장 우리와 밀접한 한6·25 전쟁 비록  60 년이상 지난났지만 그때 상황을 우리는 망각해서는 않될 것이다. 즉 대한민국의 마지막 숨통을 몸을 던져 구했던 우리 국군과 미군의 그 값진 피를 잊어서는 안 될 것이다 . 이것이 오늘 6.25전쟁 역사가 우리에게 주는 교훈이다 .   미군들의 사령관 Dean 소장을 구출하려던 한국과 미국의 영웅적인 노력은 너무나 큰 댓가를 지불하고도 허사로 끝나고 말았다 . 살아남은 두 기관사의 팔에는 아직도 총알이 박혀있고 그 죽음의 계곡을 달린 기관차는 철도 박물관에 보관돼 있다 . 그리고 지금 그 역사적 희생의 자리에는 그때 순직한 기관사 金씨를 추념하기 위한 탑이 세워져 지나는 이의 마음을 숙연케 하고 있다 .   아래 신문에 게제되었던 긴박했던 전사의 한  장면을 소개하면 서 위대한 희생을 기억하고 그 뜻을 기리고자 한다.    1950.7.20 일도 어느새 하루가 막을 내리는 오후였다 .   대전 동쪽 온천으로 퇴각하는 도로변에는 이미 인민군이 진출하여 후퇴하는 미군을 포위하고 있었다 . Dean 은 이제 대전을 떠나야할 시간임을 직감하고 1950. 7. 20 일 오후 5: 55 분 드디어 정식으로 제 24사단본부의 후퇴를 명령했다 . “ 사단 CP 를 옥천으로 이동하라 ” 그래서 대전 사수를 위해 Dean 장군과 함께 작전을 했던 모든 참모와 연대 지휘관이 Dean 의 곁을 떠났다 . As I was leaving the hotel this morning, a doorman asked me, "Where are you bound for, General?" and when I replied, "West Point," he remarked, "Beautiful place, have you ever been there before?" No human being could fail to be deeply moved by such a tribute as this, coming from a profession I have served so long and a people I have loved so well. It fills me with an emotion I cannot express. But this award is not intended primarily for a personality, but to symbolize a great moral code - the code of conduct and chivalry of those who guard this beloved land of culture and ancient descent.
